No Brunch, No Spa, No Problem: 12 Amazing Gifts That Will Make Every Mom Smile (Even In The Middle Of A Pandemic)

Christine Burke  |  May 4, 2020

A few of our best ideas to celebrate that special mom in your life, even when social distancing forces you to be apart.

With social distancing still a thing, our Mother’s Day celebrations in 2020 are going to look VERY different. For many of us, our go-to Mother’s Day gifts seem tone deaf — that gift certificate to a beloved hair salon, or tickets to a favorite show, while appreciated, will likely go unused for months. Thankfully, there are plenty of other ways to honor the badass mothers in your life without compromising anyone’s safety. We turned to our HerMoney Private Facebook group for advice, and they proved that even if quarantine rules may have put a damper on our traditional family gatherings for the day, they’ve only forced us to get more creative when it comes to our gift-giving prowess.

Kendra Scott jewelry

When Kendra started her company with just $500 back in 2002, her mission was simple: she wanted to create beautiful jewelry, be a good mom, and give back to her community. Eighteen years and 80 standalone stores later, Kendra tells HerMoney that her favorite thing is still “spending time with her kiddos.” Make sure to catch her special Mother’s Day-themed HerMoney podcast, too! Winc Wines of the Month Club

Let’s go with the obvious here: wine is always an acceptable gift, and what’s a better way to say, “I know motherhood has kicked your ass but you’ve handled it with sass and grace,” than delivering wine right to a worthy mom’s doorstep every month? Nothing. The answer is nothing is better.

Twist Your Spirits

You know the saying: “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere” and Twist Your Spirits knows exactly how to help that special mom celebrate. A pretty box of perfectly measured cocktail supplies arrives with instructions on how to make a fancy cocktail. And bonus: there’s enough in the box for multiple cocktails so it can truly be 5 o’clock somewhere…often.

Shrubs and Landscaping  (yes, really)

By and large, most comments in our Mother’s Day gift centered around gardening, specifically shrubs, flowers, and landscaping.

Alexis T. commented, “I most prefer experiences and services. Since experiences are pretty much a no-go right now, I’d love for someone to hire a landscaper to clean up my flower beds and mow my lawn.” And, of course, she says, dinner delivered right as the work is finished.

Other members suggested cute garden signs from Etsy because moms seem to be finding their gardening zen in the midst of the chaos of quarantine. Angie M. suggests garden flags from Personal Creations that can be personalized to reflect your unique family. Cheryl H. shares that, for her mother, she’ll be buying “A new flower or flowering bush for her backyard. It’s been this way for years. I live 2000 miles away so my Dad takes her to the local greenhouse on my behalf and she picks out what she wants.” When I told her that my kids were treating me to a similar gift this year (a weeping willow to replace a tree that we had removed last year), she told me that part of the gift is the joy her mom receives from watching it grow over the years.

And, she says, “I started this tradition with her ages ago, when I was a broke college student and all I could afford was a couple of lilies in different colours. Now I just tell her to get what she wants and tell my Dad to take it out of my bank account.” We love that, Cheryl!

Cellar Door Care Packages

HerMoney group member Sarah H. tells us, “Cellar Door Preserves has crafted care packages for sale that are a creative way to support small businesses, many of whom are too small to receive any support from the CARES Act. It’s literally the best jam I’ve ever had, and the care packages are supplemented with great “treat yourself” goodies like tea towels and candles….needless to say I bought care packages for the moms in my life this year!”

A Diaper Bag (But Not Really…)

Everyone knows a new working mom, and, even though many of us are working from our home offices right now, eventually, we’ll be back to commuting. This stylish messenger-style diaper bag, though originally designed for dads, is quickly becoming a mom staple, too. (Full disclosure: I own one of these messenger bags and it’s my go-to work bag, even though my kids were toddlers a decade ago).

Notes to Self Socks

If the special mom in your life loves to workout, make her feel loved right down to her toes with these positive affirmation socks. Founded in 2011, owner Laura Schmidt decided to put her belief in positive thinking into action… literally. And on people’s feet. (If my family is reading, I won’t be mad to receive a 12-pack gift box of my favorite socks. Just saying.)

Cheryl’s Cookies Yoga Gift Set

I was “today years old” when I realized that the only thing missing from a refreshing yoga session was a side of cookies. This cute set, complete with cookies, yoga mat, and water bottle, is perfect for that special yogi who has helped to mother you. Namaste, and pass the cookies. NOM. I mean, OM.

Fancy Linen Tea Towels

Quarantine can feel a little fancier for your favorite mom with these simply gorgeous tea towels that are sourced and handmade in San Francisco. These were recommended by group member Sarah R., and Jessica Patel, HerMoney’s Chief of Growth agrees: “I’m a sucker for a pretty tea towel!” she says. Amen, momma.

Loungewear

It’s no secret that most of us abandoned pants that button or zip weeks ago. And, admit it: you are reading this from your couch in your favorite sweats that you probably should have gotten rid of years ago, right? Why not up your mom’s loungewear game with one of these luxe brands? And it’s totally fine if you buy yourself a pair, too. It’s a pandemic. There are no rules anymore.

Katie Kime has a line of soft, color coordinated sweats that make us swoon.
