HerMoney Podcast Episode 299: Turn Your Clutter Into Cash

Kathryn Tuggle  |  December 29, 2021

Make 2022 the year you get organized. We break it down, room by room, for all living spaces. (And we talk where to sell + donate!)

On the eve of a New Year, we’re reminded just how many of us are looking to 2022 to be the fresh and vibrant start that we’ve been waiting for. New beginnings are always so exciting (and yes, sometimes scary!) and this week, we’re going to kick ours off by looking within. Not within ourselves — although that’s always a good idea — but rather, within our living spaces. In this episode, we’re taking a long look inside our homes or apartments — or whatever space you call home — and assessing what’s really serving you, and what you might need to get rid of.

Think of it this way: if 2020 was the year that we all looked for new real estate, then 2021 was the year when we all just got sick of looking at our space… And what about 2022? We hope you’ll join us for a HerMoney challenge — let’s make 2022 the year that we clean up, organize, declutter, and make a little profit on the things we no longer need… Because there is nothing better than a space that is truly welcoming and in order.

LISTEN: How To Get Organized For 2022, with Julie Morgenstern

On this episode, we’re joined by professional organizer Anna Bauer, founder of Sorted By Anna in New York City. Over the years, she’s helped thousands of clients break up with clutter and regain peace in their homes. Listen in as Anna and Jean discuss the biggest reasons why we keep things we don’t need, and how we can move past that. We also talk about what people struggle with most as they’re looking to get organized, and why we don’t all have perfectly organized de-cluttered closets. (And if we do want a perfectly organized closet, where should we start??)

Anna and Jean walk us room by room, through the average home or apartment, and talk about some of the places where we can start to declutter. We talk about the kitchen, living room, bedroom, and closet, and we break down what’s worth keeping, what should be thrown away, what should be donated, and what should be sold. (And we review the same instructions for those who live in apartments as well as homes.)

And while we’re on the topic of decluttering, we take a step back and talk about how we can live in an anti-clutter way, and train ourselves to just not bring home things that we don’t need in the first place.

And if you’re looking to sell your unwanted items, you’re in luck. Anna breaks down where to get started to earn the most you can, and her favorite websites for making a profit. Then, in Mailbag, Jean and Kathryn take questions on long term care insurance, and on upgrading to an electric SUV. And in Thrive, the foods you should buy in bulk in order to save money.
