HerMoney Podcast Episode 306: Cooking & Food Budget Hacks

Kathryn Tuggle  |  February 16, 2022

How to stop spending so much on food, with kitchen swaps that will leave you with a full stomach, and a full wallet.

As we head into year #3 of the pandemic, we’re guessing that even your favorite meals are feeling a little… tired. Or maybe you’re just tired of making them. That’s why this week, we wanted to do a special cooking show to get us back on track with some excitement in the kitchen, and some ideas for how we can create new favorites — and save money while we’re at it.

We’re doing it all with Leanne Brown, the New York Times bestselling author of the cookbook Good and Cheap: Eat Well on $4/Day, and author of the brand new title, “GOOD ENOUGH: A Cookbook.”

Listen in as Jean and Leanne discuss how she got her start — her first book is based on her master’s thesis in food studies at NYU that went viral. It’s now been downloaded more than 15 million times. It made such a difference in people’s lives because it showed how it’s possible to eat healthily and cheaply at the same time. Leanne describes how there are millions of people who live on the US food stamp allotment of $4.00 a day, and she wanted to show that it’s possible to eat unprocessed, whole foods on a budget. In her new book, she shows how we can embrace the joys of imperfection when we’re cooking, and even practice self-care in the kitchen.

We also talk about the never-ending responsibility of cooking — some of us face the pressure to provide three meals a day to a family that’s depending on us. And even if we don’t have kids, we’ve all found ourselves in the kitchen more times than we care to count over the last couple of years. Leanne advises women who feel like the “joy” of cooking has long since been replaced by feelings of dread or anxiety. She also weighs in on food spending, food waste, and the dangers of buying groceries that we never use. You won’t want to miss her favorite budget-friendly meals and kitchen hacks for spending less. In Mailbag, we tackle retirement account contributions, and savings priorities for younger couples. And in Thrive, a look at some of the conversations you need to have before you get married.
