Love + Money: Do They Really Mix?

Kathryn Tuggle  |  May 19, 2023

When love and money mix, fights can result — but so can peace and harmony, if you work together. We tackle your relationships and money FAQ.

We’ve heard from so many members of our HerMoney family lately who are wrestling with some big — and small! — questions around love and money. Specifically, we’ve gotten questions around fairness, competing priorities, and how to share your money in a way that works for both you and your partner. Because in matters of love and money, emotions often run high, and money fights can be some of our worst fights.

LISTEN: How Couples Can Fight Fairly About Money

This is why our financial future together is such an important topic. According to the American Psychological Association’s most recent Stress in America report, 66% of adults say that money is a significant source of stress in their lives, and within that group, 55% say that money is a source of fights or tension in their family. And even if money fights aren’t something you find yourself battling often, research from the American Institute of CPAs shows that 7 in 10 couples have had some sort of financial disagreement with their partner in the past year.

In other words, money can all too easily be the thing that keeps us awake at night with worry — but it can also be a source of empowerment and joy. On a special episode of the HerMoney Podcast, we’re focusing on how we can have far less of the former, and far more of the latter in our lives!

We’re joined by Natalie Taylor, a Certified Financial Planner and Behavioral Financial Advisor. She’s also the Head of Financial Advice at Monarch Money, a platform that makes it easy to track your accounts, optimize your spending, analyze your investments and share finances with your partner. Natalie shares some of the most common relationships and money problems she’s encountered in her work, and how she’s seen couples successfully work through money fights.

LISTEN: The Truth About Couples and Money

Jean and Natatlie tackle listener questions on splitting bills fairly, investing in real estate vs. saving for retirement, and what it means to “keep score” in a relationship, financially. We also discuss what to do if you and your partner have vastly different money goals, and how to find common ground for productive — even joyous! — discussions.
