The Crisis in Ukraine: How You Can Help

Zoe Fisher  |  March 2, 2022

Here’s what you can do to assist those suffering from the Russian attacks on Ukraine.

Throughout the past week, news outlets have been flooded with horrendous images and headlines broadcasting the Russian invasion on Ukraine. Missile strikes, shellings and military vehicles have forced Ukrainian civilians to flee for safety. Nearly one million refugees from Ukraine have crossed into the neighboring countries of Poland, Slovakia and Romania, and the rush to leave has led to hours-long lines and overcrowding at some of these borders. European Union officials predict that as many as 7 million could eventually be displaced.

It’s understandable — more than understandable — if you want to help. Keep in mind that at times like these, although you may be tempted to send supplies, sending cash is best. Organizations not just in Ukraine and neighboring countries, but also in America and around the globe, are aiding with shelter, food, water and additional help. Here are 7 organizations that will gratefully put your money to work.

Doctors Without Borders

Staffers of the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Ukraine are “seeking ways to respond to the medical and humanitarian needs as the conflict evolves.” According to their website, they’re also assessing the needs of Ukrainian refugees in Poland and other neighboring countries. CARE

CARE’s Ukraine Crisis Fund aims to reach 4 million with immediate aid and recovery, like food, water, hygiene kits, psychosocial support, and cash assistance — prioritizing women and girls, families, and the elderly. Click here to contribute.

World Central Kitchen

The World Central Kitchen works to provide meals in response to humanitarian, climate, and community crises. Founder and world renowned chef José Andrés started World Central Kitchen after an earthquake devastated Haiti in 2010, and he’s now feeding Ukrainian refugees at the Polish border. Those wanting to help finance the group can do so here.

Animal Save Movement

The Russian invasion in Ukraine has led to thousands of Ukrainians fleeing the country with their companion animals. Sadly, some also had to leave their companion animals behind — resulting in many animals in Ukraine that are in desperate need of food, medicine and care. Animal shelters in Ukraine are facing an immediate crisis as food supplies run low due to supply issues as a result of the Russian attack. The Animal Save Movement compiled a list of reputable animal rescues and shelters in Ukraine for those looking to help.

“Keep Ukraine’s media going”

This GoFundMe campaign for journalists around Ukraine aims at helping media contributors relocate, set-up back offices and continue their operations from neighboring countries. Click here to learn more.

“Keep the Kyiv Independent going”

For many years, the English-speaking world relied on the Kyiv Post for trustworthy news from Ukraine. But on November 8, the Kyiv Post owner shut down the distinguished 26-year-old newspaper and fired its entire team. The staff considers it retaliation for defending editorial independence. The team launched a new media outlet, the Kyiv Independent, working to bring the world trusted, important information about the facts on the ground. It is crucial to bring credible news from Ukraine to the world. Especially when Russian forces are working hard to distort the perception of Ukraine abroad. Click here to offer support.

Voices of Children

The Voices of Children Foundation has been helping children affected by the war since 2015. The Ukraine-based charitable foundation provides psychological and psychosocial support to children. The group is currently helping children and families across Ukraine, including helping with evacuations. Click here to donate.
