How These Women Are Inspiring Young Women (And How You Can, Too!)

“Women helping women” is a mantra we love to live by, and one that has helped to inspire women for generations. Where would we be without each other? It was women who were banned together in 1920 to support the inclusion of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution. In the 1970s, we rallied to support the Equal Rights Amendment, and today, we have the Women’s March, the #MeToo movement, and countless other avenues for supporting equal rights, together. 

It’s clear that we have each other’s backs… But the hope is that in the future, we won’t have to reach breaking points of inequality in order to take a stand for one another. Instead, we should inspire women to become activists from Day 1, from the ground up. And what’s the best way to do that? Inspiring the young women in our lives now.

So, what are your favorite ways to uplift younger generations? I headed to our private HerMoney Facebook Group to find out some of our community members’ favorite ways to share their knowledge and teach those younger than us. 

GIFTING 

Our own Editor-In-Chief, Kathryn Tuggle, weighed in on the conversation, noting how important it is to teach girls that they are so much more than what’s on the surface. “I try to focus on empowering gifts for young girls whenever I am gifting,” she says. “I can remember being given makeup kits and tiaras and things as a young girl, which I honestly hated… I wanted legos, a microscope, notebooks, books, pens and pencils, that kind of thing. Whenever it’s time for me to buy something to inspire a young woman, I always look for things that will boost her confidence in who she is, rather than reinforce the idea that what she wears or how she looks is what’s important.”

Kimberly G., a teacher, weighed in saying “sketch books have been my go to gift for young girls.” She also adds that she wishes she had more girls who attended her STEM classes, adding that if she did, it would officially be her “dream job.”

VOLUNTEERING 

But gift-giving isn’t the only way to impart female wisdom and inspire young women. Kimberlee U. volunteers as a troop leader for Girl Scouts. “I lead a traditional troop and I also founded a travel troop which provides regional, domestic and international educational trips for Girls — I do this because girls who travel the world become the women who change it,” she writes. 

EDUCATING

Jen W. does the work, then imparts her wisdom in the young women in her life. “I read a lot of financial information and share it with the kids,” she says. “We have open discussions. We must help ourselves to become more knowledgeable of certain financial aspects of life, and be accountable.” And of course you know those of us at HerMoney are huge fans of teaching personal finance at any age.
